When you drive past a meadow in July and see waves of bright yellow flowers with chocolate-brown centers, you are looking at Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta). It is the state flower of Maryland and a native wildflower across almost the entire eastern half of the continent.
What it looks like
Plants grow 30 to 90cm tall on stiff, hairy stems. Each flower head is 5 to 8cm across, with 8 to 20 golden-yellow ray petals arranged around a dark chocolate-brown dome of tiny disk flowers in the center. The leaves are long, narrow, and covered in coarse hairs that feel scratchy. A healthy plant can carry a dozen blooms at once.
When and where
- Season: June through September, with July as the peak.
- Habitat: Roadsides, old fields, prairies, sunny meadow edges, native plant gardens. They like full sun and disturbed dry soil.
- Best time: Mid-morning on a sunny day, when the petals are fully open and pollinators are working the flowers.
The center is dozens of tiny flowers
The dark "eye" in the middle is not one flower, it is up to 300 tiny flowers packed together. Each one opens for just a day or two, starting from the outer ring and spiraling toward the middle. If you watch the same plant for a week, you can see the dark dome slowly turn fuzzy as the central flowers bloom. Bees and small butterflies love them because every visit gives them dozens of nectar wells in one stop.
Spot one this weekend
Black-eyed Susans are Common across the eastern US, the Midwest, and southern Canada. Any sunny field, country road, or restored prairie in July almost guarantees a sighting. Look closely at the brown center with a phone camera in macro mode, the tiny spiral pattern of unopened buds is one of nature's better hidden details.
